Keowee is young, too, kickstarting things in 2019. In terms of a more known quantity in the vicinity, make the 12-minute drive west of Clemson proper. We’re extremely interested to see what Kite Hill churns out, and our ears are open for anyone who has visited. Kite Hill Brewing opened its doors on July 4 weekend. So here’s the thing: Clemson does have a brewery. Notables: Sam Adams (Boston Taproom), Harpoon, Trillium, Night Shift, Aeronaut Clemson (also owned by Lamplighter) operates out of the front taproom, offering a full espresso menu, fresh pastries and an array of sandwiches. As if all that weren’t enough, Pepita Coffee Co. ![]() Depending on the season, there’s either outdoor space in the front or the secondary back-room bar for keeping warm. Among our favorites? The (dangerously easy to drink) 8.5 percent ABV Rabbit Rabbit double-hopped IPA, as well as the tangy Metric Systems Gose. (Fair warning: Come early during peak hours, or risk not finding a table in the cozy front taproom.) In terms of variety, Lamplighter specializes in New England IPAs and sours, but the brewery regularly pushes the envelope in its experimentation. And while there are obviously larger-scale distributors worth checking out - Sam Adams’ new-ish taproom next to Faneuil Hall, which opened in January 2020, has three floors and options aplenty - Lamplighter stands out for its intimate vibes in a larger city. Given Boston’s abundance of breweries, and Newton’s relative lack thereof, we don’t feel bad about hop-skipping over to Beantown proper.
